Ferrofluids lubrication: a status report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ferrofluids (FFs) are stable colloidal suspensions composed of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in a carrier liquid. And it is an intelligent material, exhibiting normal liquid behaviour coupled with superparamagnetic properties. Since the properties and the location of these fluids can easily be influenced by a magnetic field, FFs have recently attracted many scientific, industrial and commercial applications. Lubrication is one of the most important applications for FFs, and the advantage of FFs as lubricant, over the conventional ones, is that the former can be retained at the desired location with moderate magnetic fields. The main focus of this paper is to present a comprehensive review on FFs lubrication theories based on the three flow models of Neuringer–Rosensweig, Shliomis and Jenkins. Besides, a few experimental studies on FFs lubrication are discussed briefly. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Received 22 October 2014; Revised 31 December 2014; Accepted 4 January 2015

A short review on Ferrofluids surface modification by natural and biocompatible polymers
This paper provides an overview of how the surface properties of ferromagnetic nanoparticles dispersed in fluids is modified by natural and biocompatible polymers. Among common magnetic nanoparticles, magnetite (Fe3O4) and maghemite (g-Fe203) are popular candidates because of their biocompatibility. Natural polymeric coating materials are the most commonly used biocompatible magnetic nanopartic...
متن کاملConsequences of Sheep Blood Used as Diluting Agent for the Magnetoviscous Effect in Biocompatible Ferrofluids
Magnetic nanoparticles suspended in suitable carrier liquids can be adopted for use in biomedicine. For this to be achieved, the biocompatibility of these ferrofluids needs to be ascertained. In cancer treatment, potential applications currently under investigation include, e. g. drug targeting by using magnetic fields and the destruction of diseased cells by applying alternating magnetic field...
متن کاملVia Hexagons to Squares in Ferrofluids: Experiments on Hysteretic Surface Transformations under Variation of the Normal Magnetic Field
We report on different surface patterns on magnetic liquids following the Rosensweig instability. We compare the bifurcation from the flat surface to a hexagonal array of spikes with the transition to squares at higher fields. From a radioscopic mapping of the surface topography we extract amplitudes and wavelengths. For the hexagon–square transition, which is complex because of coexisting doma...
متن کاملSensing a physical movement with a Ferrofluidic device
In this paper the development of an inertial sensor for vibration measurements based on the use of ferrofluids is presented. The use of ferrofluids as inertial mass offers advantages over traditional devices like robustness against inertial shocks and performances controllable via electrical signals; moreover, ferrofluids density and other physical features can be controlled by an external magn...
متن کاملDrop in Ferrofluids Subjected to an Azimuthal Field
We perform direct numerical simulations of a non-magnetic drop immersed in immiscible ferrofluids in a confined Hele-Shaw cell under an azimuthal field by a diffuse-interface method. The interface is unstable in such a condition because of the inward attraction of the ferrofluids induced by the magnetic field gradient. We focus on the fingering onset and pattern influenced by the coupling visco...
